 Venezuela is the decisive battlefield of Latin America: we all will have either democracy or fascism.
Blood must not be – as irresponsibly a historically bygone leadership wants – the arbiter of the disagreements that separate Venezuelans today. Ignorance and impatience reproduce – sometimes unknowingly – authoritarian and despotic patterns. Our present differences must not lead us to make us unknown to each other as Venezuelans as much as to lead us to a conflict where violence is the only intelligible voice.
We condemn the promotion, diffusion and exaggeration of every expression of fascism, i.e., every advertisement of the interruption of democratic uses only for the satisfaction of selfish interests. Every imposition of symbolic violence directed towards the confusion of citizenry, by means of a deliberate and systematic context of falsification and misinterpretation of reality, as well as the exploitation of infamous attitudes like racism and the segregation of the dispossessed.
The perverted use of media has forged a script, a story, that feeds the resistance to progress and the atavistic fidelity to the domination of power fields, even though they do not exist anymore. The New Venezuelan Constitution and a new republic proclaim the citizen as a protagonist and builder of the nation, on the grounds of justice, social awareness and solidarity. This political means has been distorted against itself. Consequently some groups use constitutional means like referenda and the new political guarantees, to promote a regime that on April 12th and 13th 2002 abolished them, together with the legal institutions and the Constitution that endorses them. This irrational adventure has embarked citizens who have every right to oppose what they consider failures of the government.
Hate is a celebration of death. There is no peace without justice. Words must recover their meaning. We Venezuelans demand our right to the consciousness and achievement of democracy.
